Is Wearing Black Holding You Back?

Is wearing black holding you back?

Unpopular opinion: Most people don’t look their best wearing black.

Yep, I said it!

Sure, black may seem like the easiest option, but it definitely doesn’t flatter like you think.

Mind blown?

I get it—black is everywhere, and it's convenient. But unless you have super strong contrast in your personal coloring, (typically a 'winter',) chances are, black is draining you instead of highlighting your brilliance.

Beyond flattery, wearing black has a multitude of drawbacks. And it can even be a career mistake!

I’m on a mission to encourage women to stop relying on wearing so much black! And I’m backing it up with plenty of data.

The Cons of Wearing Black

(Hold on tight—there are a lot of cons!)

  1. It Can Age You: Black highlights wrinkles, brings out dark shadows, and makes you look tired. If you’re trying to look fresh and energized, wearing black might not be the “beauty product” you need.
  2. Wearing Black Can Zap Your Energy: Women have reported that black makes them feel tired. It’s not just the physical look—black can actually drain your energy.
  3. It Can Be Intimidating: Especially a black suit with a white blouse. True story: I once told an attorney client that the most intimidating outfit you can wear is a black suit with a white blouse. After trying it, she later told me she definitely intimidated the opposing counsel! OK, so it wasn’t a con for Mandy, but “intimidating” is rarely a goal for my clients.
  4. It’s Not Inviting or Approachable: If you’re networking or starting a new job, black can make you seem aloof and unwelcoming.
  5. It Doesn’t Let Your Personality Shine: Black is rarely anyone’s favorite color, and it doesn’t showcase your unique traits or personality. You deserve to wear something that truly reflects who you are!
  6. It’s Hard to Stand Out in Black: When you want to make a memorable impression, black just isn’t your friend.
  7. Public Speaking? Black Might Not Hold the Audience’s Attention: If you’re on stage, black may not be interesting enough to hold the audience’s attention.

Of course, there are times—like my client’s court case—when wearing black is the right call... but there are so many better options. (And yes, plenty of great neutrals to build your wardrobe around.)

The Pros of Wearing Black

Of course, wearing black isn’t all bad. And I don’t want you to think I ever strip all the black pieces out of my clients’ closets. It does have some merits and there are some women who truly shine wearing black:

  1. It’s Versatile: Black pairs with everything,  an easy and quick solution when you’re strapped for time. Plus, it’s easy to find in stores, so when you need something quickly, it may be your answer.
  2. Black is Uber-Authoritative: In some situations—like my client’s court appearance—black makes a powerful statement. The color black is the height of seriousness and authority, which can be advantageous. (But it’s not your only option for gaining power!)
  3. It’s Slimming: When worn correctly, there’s no denying that black is slimming, which often leads to feeling more confident. HOWEVER, I have a full quiver of secrets beyond wearing black to help my clients look and feel flattered and confident in their clothes!
  4. Black is Elegant for Formal Affairs: Black is the most acceptable color to wear for formal events. (Psst…read on...)

Wearing Black If It’s Not Your Best Color

So…what if wearing black doesn’t flatter you, but you still want to wear it? Here’s how you can still incorporate black into your wardrobe without letting it completely overshadow your natural beauty:

  1. Show Some Skin: Break up the black by showing some skin at your neckline. This will lighten up the overall look and bring attention to your face.
  2. Accessorize with Color: Add a colorful necklace or scarf to brighten your complexion.
  3. Sparkle and Shine: For evening and holiday events, try black pieces that feature sequins or light-reflecting beads to add some shine and reflection.
  4. Layer with Color: Wear a bright color on top of a column of black (black top and bottom). It’s a chic, slimming look while adding some much-needed color.
  5. Use Black as a Background: Try a higher-neck top in a different color under a black jacket. A color that brings out your eyes is especially effective in combating the effect of the black jacket.

While wearing black has its time and place, it’s just not the best option for most women—especially if you want to look inviting, fresh, and full of energy.

If you’ve been relying on black as your wardrobe base, I encourage you to explore other colors that will flatter you and make you feel more like your true, powerful self.
