How Clothes Should Fit: A Simple Fit Checklist

See if you can relate to this…

You’re getting ready for work. You put something on. You look in the mirror and think:

“That doesn’t look right. What’s going on?”

So you change.
And change again.
And again…

Now your bedroom looks like a war zone, you’re running late, so you grab the easiest thing and rush out the door.

Then all day long? You question your outfit.

If this has ever happened to you, you’re not alone.

And chances are really good that if this has happened, it was a fit issue.

Quick Fit Checklist (save this)

Use this quick check any time something feels “off”:

  • No pulling across the fabric
  • No sagging or hanging in a way that looks sloppy
  • Pants hem is right (not dragging, not awkwardly short)
  • Sleeves hit where they should (not covering your hands)
  • Button-ups lay flat (no gaping at the bust)
  • You look polished from across the room

Why Fit Matters (Especially in a Visible Role)

The way your clothes fit signals important things that can make or break your professional image.

When your clothes are tailored and intentional, you read as sharp, put together, and detail-oriented. It’s an immediate impression.

When fit is off, it can unintentionally communicate the opposite,  not because of who you are, but because the visual cues are there.

Fit is also what makes clothes look more expensive. A less expensive item that fits beautifully will almost always look higher-end than an expensive item that fits poorly.

Where Fit Issues Show Up the Most

Two places fit issues pop up constantly:

1) Pant length

For FULL LENGTH trousers, flares, and wide-leg pants, here's your guideline:

Your hems should land about 1/4–1/2 inch off the floor. MAXIMUM.

Yes, that means you pick your shoes before you hem your pants. (Annoying? Sure. Worth it? Absolutely!)

Also: you might see a trend of pants dragging on the ground. It can look cool in a magazine shoot. In real life you’ll trip — and you’ll ruin the pants.

2) Sleeve length (especially for petites)

This is the one I see constantly in closet edits, especially with petite clients:

Beautiful blazer… sleeves covering most of the hands… so she rolls the sleeves up 2–3 times.

Rolled sleeves can absolutely look stylish, but your goal is to start with sleeves that are the right length to begin with. Otherwise it ends up looking bulky and messy and changes the whole look of the jacket.

Good news! More premium brands are offering petites and talls now (finally). But even with that improvement, tailoring is still the difference between “fine” and “wow… she’s put together!”

The Fit Formula

The FIT FORMULA is an easy assessment you can use both when you're shopping and getting dressed in the morning to know whether your clothes are fitting right.

It's quick, easy to remember and can especially prevent you from buying clothes that don't fit. And you can definitely use it when you're editing your closet.

Here's how it works...put your garment on; look in the mirror, and follow these 3 steps.

Step 1: Look for horizontal lines

Horizontal lines are when the fabric is pulled too far across.
Translation: the garment is too tight.

Step 2: Look for vertical lines

Vertical lines are when the fabric hangs too loosely.
Translation: the garment is too big.

Step 3: Look for diagonal lines

Diagonal lines usually mean the garment isn’t designed for your body shape or proportions. Pass on that piece. No amount of alterations is going to make it work.

If you notice any of these lines, welcome to the club. Most of us aren’t trained to look for fit challenges. We assume if we can put something on, it must be okay.

Keep the following points in mind:

  • If clothes are too small/tight, they tend to look less expensive.
  • If clothes are too big, you can look bigger than you are (and I know most of us don’t want that).

A Quick Real-Life Example (Because This Happens All the Time)

Whenever I think about fit, I think about my client Jen.

Jen is an attorney. When she first called me, she had just had a baby and had become a partner in her firm.

She loved her maternity clothes… and she was wearing them ten months after she gave birth.

At that point, the maternity clothes were totally drowning her and making her look a lot bigger than she was. The look also didn’t match the professional image and leadership look she needed for her new role.

Once we neatly tucked the maternity pieces into storage, we found clothes that fit her body and (personal style) beautifully using my Fit Formula.

She created a high-end look that matched her personality and her business goals.

Even better...she told me her new clothes were even more comfortable. And she was able to concentrate better, because she wasn’t spending all day pulling at her clothes trying to keep them in the right place.

What to Tailor First (If You’re Going to Tailor Anything)

You don’t need to tailor your entire closet all at once (unless you want to).

Start by identifying what you question or what never feels quite right:

  • pant length
  • blazer sleeves
  • waist shaping
  • gaping shirt buttons

And only tailor what you truly love and plan to keep long term. Tailoring is an investment, so it should go into pieces you’ll actually wear.

How Tailoring Works With Me

Tailoring is part of my style system because it removes guesswork.

If we’re shopping at a store that has a tailor, once you’ve made your purchase decision and we have items to be altered, we call the tailor in and I direct the tailor on what needs to be done.

She’ll start pinning and when we’re satisfied with the look… voilà. We’re done!

If tailoring isn’t available at that store, we book a time to meet at a tailor and the process is the same.

Keep in mind… I’m picky and can get a little bossy (but still nice) with the tailor. I want you to have the perfect fit...no settling!

FAQ: How Clothes Should Fit

How do I know if something is too tight?

Look for horizontal lines (the fabric pulling across your body).
That’s the #1 sign a piece is too small.

Other clues:

  • buttons pulling or gaping
  • zippers straining
  • you feel restricted when you sit, raise your arms, or walk
  • the fabric looks stretched and stressed

How should clothes fit if I’m between sizes?

This is super common.

In general: buy the size that fits your largest area comfortably, then tailor the rest if you love the piece.

Example:

  • If a blazer fits your shoulders and bust but is loose at your waist → taper the waist.
  • If pants fit your waist but are really baggy in the hips/legs/seat → take those areas in for a perfect fit.

Do I need to tailor everything?

For work clothing, yes. For casual clothing, maybe not.

Start with pieces that give you the biggest return:

  • pant hems
  • blazer sleeves
  • waist shaping
  • saggy seats

And only tailor pieces you truly love and will keep long term. Tailoring is an investment, so it should go into clothes you’ll actually wear.

Should my pants touch the floor?

No, not only do you run the risk of falling, but when hems are dragging you may ruin them. (Currently, I'm seeing photos in magazines with a model's pants puddling on the ground. What you have to remember is...it's a photo shoot, not real life.)

For trousers, flares, and wide-leg pants, a great guideline is:
hems should land about 1/4–1/2 inch off the floor (with your chosen shoes).

This gives you a beautiful, long leg line making you look taller and increasing your stature and authority.

How should clothes fit if I’ve gained or lost weight recently?

Give yourself permission to adjust garments even if you're still losing weight. (Safety pins are never a good look!)

A couple of guidelines:

  • If your weight change is temporary or still changing, focus on comfort + flexibility (and tailor only your “forever pieces”).
  • Once your weight has stabilized, assess whether items can truly be taken in without ruining the look of the garments.
