What to Wear When You’ve Gained Weight

A common question these days–What do you wear when you’ve gained weight?!

I’m just gonna put it out there…I’ve gained weight! I was pretty diligent throughout most of the lockdown but have actually gained weight to the tune of 10-15 pounds in the last few months.  (I don’t really know as I’m too afraid to get on the scale 😬 )

When I did my closet edit to get it ready for summer, there were so many clothes that didn’t fit. I actually didn’t try everything on, as I know some things were a little tight to begin with, lol!

I also know that I’m not alone! Most of my clients have complained of weight gain and it’s the topic of just about every Zoom and now in-person group conversations.

So I thought I’d share how I’m dealing with what to wear since I’ve gained weight. I’m sharing exactly what I’m wearing, but knowing it’s not all about me…I’m sharing tips on how to pull these looks together and where to wear them.

Elastic waist joggers

Even with the elastic waist, I had to size up! My satin joggers with a matching satin tank top have become somewhat of a summer uniform for me.

Something to know is that I don’t really wear sweats around the house or ever…just not my jam. (Trust me, I have at home cozy pants, lol!)  But since joggers are such a prevalent style right now and since they’re satin, I actually wear them as my business casual look.

All one color and fabric creates a jumpsuit look with the MAJOR upside of easier potty breaks! And 2 pieces creating a “faux jumpsuit” is  a much easier fit and more flattering since I’m short waisted.

To elevate the look even more, I’ve worn it with flatform shoes and a black, coated denim jacket.

So does this mean you have to be a total copy cat? Not at all! (But ya can if you want, lol!)

Here’s how to pull  the jogger look all together:

  • There’s no shame in wearing an elastic waist any more! They allow for weight gain or weight loss and still fit.
  • Choose a top in the same color or one that creates a very low contrast for the most slimming look.
  • Consider flatforms, wedges or another casual (even if it’s tiny) heel. Of course you can wear flats and sneakers for a more casual look.
  • Add a jacket to finish the outfit and don’t forget jewelry.

Where to wear it: Business casual functions, Zoom meetings (you’ll be comfy and feel put together,) dinner out (if your joggers are silk or satin,) just about anywhere if you’re going the athleisure look.

A big dress

Voluminous dresses are a big trend right now. It kind of goes against my advice that super oversized clothes will make you look bigger, but in this case I’m breaking my rule!

I normally wouldn’t go for something so voluminous, but I fell in love with this dress the moment I put it on. Many of these “big” dresses also have big puffed sleeves, (which would be perfect on someone with a small torso.) I do love halter necklines and this sundress is also made out of 100% cotton…so hard to find!

All of that said, I did wear my dress with a belt to rein it in. But I’ll also wear it without a belt, especially when it’s really hot…nothing touching your tummy=much cooler and comfy!

Here’s how to pull  the voluminous dress look all together:

  • Voluminous dresses are typically made from 100% cotton. Choose a darker color or print to minimize the appearance of wrinkles.
  • Find a dress that’s fitted in the bodice if your bustline is on the larger size.
  • Consider a belt to wrangle the volume if the dress feels like it’s overpowering you.
  • Don’t forget to accessorize. Large earrings are cooler in the heat than a necklace. Choose somewhat casual shoes-even sneakers!

Where to wear it: a casual luncheon, dinner out, wine tasting, sight seeing, museum hopping, etc.

Mid-rise shorts and t’s

Of course I don’t wear casual shorts when I’m working with clients, but I LOVE shorts and t’s. And I’m wearing this kind of outfit for casual outings, not so much because it disguises my middle, but because my legs are my best feature.

Feeling fabulous when you’ve gained weight isn’t always about disguising what you don’t like, but showing off what you do like. Check out how to highlight your best assets.  People will see your whole look and compliment you. They don’t fixate on any one body part! You must remember this!

Back to the outfit…I mention mid-rise shorts, because high-rise shorts are prevalent this summer. After trying on countless pairs of high-rise shorts on my short waisted, thicker middle, I vowed never again! These high-waisted monsters also tend to have very wide leg openings, actually making my legs look too skinny.

Here’s how to pull  shorts and t’s all together:

  • Recognize which style shorts are best for your body. You may be more flattered in high-waisted or mid-rise.
  • Choose somewhat fitted t’s with a flattering neckline.
  • Do a french tuck for structure with mid-rise shorts. High-risers require a full tuck!
  • Accessorize like you would any outfit and don’t be afraid to wear a cute heel…It really elevates the look.

Where to wear it: Brewery hopping, errands (minus the heels for me!) casual family dinners, picnics at the park.

It’s so exciting to be able to do things again!! Which look is your favorite? Which “uniform” will you wear if you’ve gained weight?
