Luckily, this week has warmed up a bit, but I’ve learned after living most of my life in Colorado…it’s still winter, so it’s way too early to put the winter clothes away! Mornings are cold; mid-day is warm; and evening are cool again (you know…4 seasons in one day,) so we’ll just rely on layering mid-weight basics.

As part of my 3 part series of 3 Ways to Freshen Up Your Winter Outfits, the second tip I have for you to get out of the mid-winter wardrobe doldrums is to mix and match prints. 

Mixing prints has been a big trend for a few years. If you’re interested in mixing prints, here are a few prints that mix well: stripes, plaid, polka dots, animal prints, and florals.

Now, head to your closet, find a few prints and try on a few combos. Check out this post/video to get a few more “rules” for mixing and matching prints. If you haven’t see the video, be sure to check it out…you’ll see me wearing a mix and matched prints and I give tons of outfit ideas!

For today’s example, I’m sticking with black and white. Let’s face it, most of us have black and white (or ivory) in our closets, and a lot of our basics are mid-weight, perfect for layering for this crazy season.

As you can see, black and white polka dots mix really well with black and white stripes. If you’re super daring, add in a checked boot. When you want to tone it down a bit, add a solid colored jacket/sweater.

Or if you’re brand new to pattern mixing or you prefer a more subtle look, go for a solid top, dotted skirt, and printed shoes.

Today’s outfit is business casual, but there are plenty of ways to make it look more professional or more casual…the beauty of great basics!
