You may feel like you’ve worn all of your newer fall and winter clothes over and over all ready. And while it’s fun and feels great to get new things, there’s a lot to be said for shopping your closet and making the most of what you already have.
As a wardrobe consultant, I love helping women discover “new” outfits in their closets with well loved pieces. Here are some common basics you may have forgotten about along with some new ideas of how to wear them.
Striped Piece
This can be a top or skirt. Or it can even be a pin striped suiting piece. Stripes are fresh for winter and mix well with prints for an even fresher look.
Oversized boyfriend inspired button down shirt
Think white, light or French blue and stripes. Wear it as a tunic with leggings and a cardigan or jacket. Loosely tuck said shirt into a skirt for “oh so French flair.”
Slouchy cardigan
Cashmere is divine, looking both refined and relaxed at the same time. A fun color like hot pink or red (for Valentine’s Day) can brighten any winter day!
White Jeans
Banish the “no white after Labor Day” rule! For the most wintery look, top your jeans with a textured sweater in a dark color, i.e. Navy. Or go monochromatic with varying shades of white, cream or beige. Keep it interesting by mixing up the textures.

Yep, burgundy is a neutral!
Oversized neutral colored sweater
Think beige, ivory or even white for a “bright” winter look. Of course, any neutral will do. If you normally think of “oversized” as strictly casual, try it with a pencil skirt or slim slacks, half tucked for business casual appeal.
Pretty blouse
Perhaps a bow blouse or a trendy, lacy Victorian styled blouse is your style. For the most modern look, wear this blouse with jeans, not trousers. Pop a blazer over the ensemble for casual Friday. Or try a printed blouse with a colorful cardigan, different from your norm.
Denim jacket
Replace almost any jacket in your closet with a denim jacket. (Keep in mind; your outfit automatically becomes more casual.) For a fun juxtaposed outfit. I love a waist length jean jacket over duster cardigans.
I hope this post has inspired you to shop your closet and extend your winter wardrobe. As I always recommend, creating your outfits in advance and having them ready to go in the morning leaves you feeling stylish, confident, relaxed and ready for anything your day hands you.
