Let’s face it–winter is a long season. Traditionally, we wear a lot more dark neutral colors this season in comparison to the light, bright shades of spring and summer. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
There are plenty of ways to cheer up your cold weather closet without buying a whole new wardrobe. Try these ideas on for size.
Bright sweaters and blouses
Chances are good that the majority of your clothes for fall/winter are black, brown or charcoal gray. Why not add a few colorful, but warm tops to wear with the dark pants, skirts, jeans and leggings?
Or shop your closet for bright pieces you may not wear on a regular basis. There’s absolutely no reason you need to stick to all neutrals just because it’s winter.
Coral sweaters are fabulous with charcoal gray. Magenta cardigans wake up black skirts. Kelly green paired with navy is reminiscent of spring.
Trendy Pastel Coats and Jackets
Pastels, especially pink and blue are extra stylish this winter and spring. While a pink or baby blue coat may not seem as practical as your standby black, the pick-me-up you’ll get every time you envelop yourself in the soft shade is well worth the trade off.
Bold Accessories
Is your closet stuffed but your jewelry box bare and your accessory armoire empty? Jewelry and accessories are the answer to perk up your winter wardrobe.
Scarves and jewelry in lemon yellow, lime green, electric blue and shocking pink add a much-needed jolt of energy to dull hued basics. And who says your shoes have to be black or brown? Fuchsia suede pumps are fabulous with both black and brown bottoms.
Can’t afford a new coat right now? Gloves in knit or colored leather along with a coordinating hat and scarf will instantaneously add pop to any neutral topper.
Color Blocked
If you’ve completely had it with your dark colored clothes and you’re feeling a bit daring, try wearing two accent colors together. Skip the (dark) neutrals altogether!
Dip your toes in the water by combining maroon and eggplant. Brighten up even more with cobalt and light gray; orange, olive (bright) and winter white; or burgundy and blush.
With the post holiday sales going strong and these ideas on your shopping list, you’ll be able to update and brighten your winter wardrobe in an instant.

Great suggestions. It would be good in one of your articles to address what is “winter white” vs. summer white and is it really an issue to wear either one throughout the year?
Thanks for the comment, Cory Ann! I indeed will post about white!
