For my Fall Trend Report I shared a lot about “fall colors”. You know, they’re the warm colors that just ooze fall coziness!
If you’re more of a fan of black, white and grey…you may have felt left out. But never fear, I’m featuring the ever popular neutrals in this post.
No matter whether you are a member of “team black and white” or “team fall colors,” there’s no denying the power of having a few basic black pieces in your closet. It doesn’t get much easier to get dressed than with a pair of black pants!
Today I thought I’d talk about some super comfy pieces that can be mixed and matched to create super interesting outfits.
At the end of a recent, super successful shopping day with a client, I headed toward the escalator to go home but stopped in my tracks when I spied the mannequin on the style board below. I was drooling!
Of course, I had to take a pic and also find out the specifics about each piece.
If you look closely, you’ll see that each piece is really quite basic. The lines are simple. Even though the grey maxi sweater is unique, it’s also a very clean shape. And when you have simple basics, they’re very easy to combine into interesting combinations. I thought I’d break down each piece and talk about what to look for and make these basics your own.

Comfortable Fall Basics to Mix and Match
Leggings: The mannequin and I’m showing faux leather leggings, but any black legging would be an instant update for your wardrobe. Instead of wearing the skirt under the maxi sweater, substitute leggings. A jacket over leggings is the most updated way to wear leggings for 2020!
Slip skirt: Bias cut slip skirts have a feminine drape. It’s totally unexpected under the long sweater, but there’s no reason it can be worn with the blazer, too.
Black blazer: This one on display is scuba knit and has rugged zip pockets for a completely updated yet classic look. (This one’s a little pricey, but if it’s in your budget it’ll last forever.) Sub in any black blazer you LOVE, and you’ll be amazed how many looks you can create. Any black or grey top underneath will work or add a pop of color if that’s more your style.
Black shoes: While the mannequin is wearing high heeled mary janes, I subbed in black booties. Booties are indispensable basic in most wardrobes! A pointy toe creates a bit dressier look.

Over to you…would you wear these pieces? Do you have these basics in your wardrobe?
